Abstract: Some estimates for the internet energy consumption reach 24,000 TWh of electricity a year by 2035 (a 20,000% increase in energy consumption). AI data centres and the digitisation of developing markets are driving it, but there is plenty we can do about it, starting with reusing the heat that data centres throw away. This seminar talks about the drivers of this increase, mitigations that are planned and introduces GDIEM, a simulation tool that lets you test each of these drivers and fixes, country by country, and see what they do to energy and emissions. Bio: David Jones is a PhD student in Engineering at the University of Cambridge, where he is building GDIEM, a global model of the internet's energy use and emissions. He has spent 15 years in telecommunications and digital infrastructure, from mobile towers to data centres. In Nigeria he ran West Africa's largest renewable energy programme, bringing solar power to mobile towers that ran on diesel generators. He is also s a recovering management consultant.
